Wellington Shire Council and fjmt engaged Pidgeon Ward to create the signage and wayfinding for the reimagined Port of Sale area. The goal of the project was to revitalise the precinct creating a multi-use cultural and civic hub. The project included the redesign of an existing heritage listed office style building which was re-purposed to house a regional Art Gallery, public library, multi-use meeting rooms, visitor centre and cafe. The landscape was also redeveloped with the establishment of a new playground, updated walking paths and basketball court.

The purpose of the signage from the exterior was to identify the area and attract vehicle traffic from the busy adjacent highway. This was achieved with large Pā€™s made from powder coated and tubed aluminium and were placed at a series of entry points to the site. Once visitors are at ground level the exterior signage helped navigate into the interior space or around the exterior with restrained yet vibrant typography, iconography and precinct maps.

The interior aspect of the package was again rooted in large identifiers but this time for the floor levels. The large floor numbers denoted the levels and also contained wayfinding on either side at a reduced scale. This served as the base for the remainder of the package which included the use of a custom typeface and two custom icon sets.
